Danny Rooney 1937 – 2016

Danny Rooney a former Chair of the Haringey Irish Centre passed away on Sunday August 28 th. Danny made a huge contribution to the Centre. He was prepared to undertake any task from cleaning to repairs, from chairing GMC meetings and casting a scrupulous eye over balance sheets to helping out in the car park on Spurs match days.

Danny had a passion for all things Irish. He had a great love for Irish music and dancing and many nights he could be found dancing with the traditional Irish Set Dancers at the Centre. He loved a singing session and had a great singing voice. He would read the Irish newspapers every day and he would follow the gaelic games on tv. He was a great follower of the GAA and was particularly proud of his association with Gary Fahey (through his wife Bridie) many will recall that Gary was captain of the Galway senior team who went on to win the All Ireland Football Finals in 1998 and 2001. He was a keen follower of jump racing and made an annual trip to the Cheltenham Festival. Above all Danny loved going back to Sligo to Ballintrillick and fishing during the mayfly season on Lake Corrib.

Danny’s wife Bridie, who predeceased him, was the Administrator of the Irish Centre when it first opened in 1987. Danny will be missed by his friends but particularly by his sons, Enda, Des, Niall & Declan and the next generation of Rooneys, Ar dheis De go raibh a anam.
