Advice & Support Service
Services Provided
The Advice & Support Service was set up in 1989 to assist the more vulnerable members of the Irish community with the objective of improving access to services and overall quality of life. Over the past 19 years the service has grown and developed providing assistance with a wide range of issues including housing/homelessness, consumer rights, health matters, grant applications, welfare benefits, specialist disability advice including tribunal representation, employment issues, specialist debt advice and an outreach service for those unable to attend the office for any reason.
The Advice Service is now possibly more accessible than a Citizen’s Advice Bureau and covers practically as many issues. It was the first community group in north London to be awarded the Positive About Disabled People Logo from the Department of Work and Pensions in 2006 and currently holds the Legal Services Commission accreditation, operating in accordance with the required working policies and procedures.
In addition to the main advice and support work there are many other projects undertaken during the year. These have included disability awareness, alternative therapies day, information on will writing, healthy eating, personal safety awareness, stroke awareness and other important topics relevant to people’s everyday life.
More recently over the past four years we have introduced computer training for people over 50 years of age with no experience whatsoever of computers. This has proved a huge success with the community and has been instrumental in connecting these people to services and families. All students attain a minimum level of competence which enables them to progress to a higher course should they wish to do so.
