President Michael D. Higgins’ visit to the Haringey Irish Centre was a special day. Welcomed back to the Centre following his election victory the President of Ireland met with the Centre Management Committee, Centre staff, the Mayor of Haringey, David Lammy MP, Centre User Groups, Spurs representatives, London & Reading GAA members and a large assembly of invited guests. The Chairperson of the Irish Centre, Pat Kelly, welcomed everyone and introduced brief speeches from the Mayor of Haringey Sheila Peacock, David Lammy MP, Ambassador Bobby McDonagh and finally the Irish President, who spoke for 20 minutes. The President praised the Centre for "having achieved a genuine multi-cultural community space”. This was reflected in the music provided by a Moserrat steel band and a traditional Irish music school, ‘Feith an Cheoil’. The President’s commitment to communities was evident in how he spoke, what he said and the effort he made to meet personally with everyone who wanted to shake hands with him. The day was both uplifting and enjoyable and we look forward to his next visit!
